NAIG - Indigenous Games - TEAM ONTARIO in search of Gold

 

TEAM ONTARIO IN SEARCH OF GOLD

 

(July 20, 2014)... Team Ontario is in the hunt for a championship, as they travel to Regina, Saskatchewan to participate in the 2014 North American Indigenous Games. The U16 team is coached by Rochester Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres. 

 

The games are being held from Sunday, July 20th through Sunday, July 27th. The annual event features 4,500 participants from 21 teams, competing in 14 sports at three age categories in male and female divisions. The lacrosse portion of the NAIG will run from Monday, July 21st to Friday, July 25th

 

Styres, whose son Bo is on the U16 team, and his players will experience an Olympic-style atmosphere during their trip. The University of Regina Student Residence Athlete’s Village will house all of the game’s athletes. Upon arriving, each player will receive a full team uniform kit, consisting of a team jacket, track pant, two golf shirts, one cap, one water bottle and trading pins.

 

Team Ontario’s roster features the following players: Dylan Blackbird, Wakeriat “Bo” Bowhunter, Kaid Hart, Bronson Hill, Ryan Johnson, Jonathan Martin, Darrell Martin, Mike Martin Abel, Wade Riley, Ceaton Smoke, George Whiteye, Spencer Martin, Perry Jacobs, Tyler Foxe Mackenzie and Dustin Hill. The players are mostly from Six Nations with other kids coming from communities like Walpole Island, Delaware of the Thames First Nation, Munsee-Delaware, Lac Seul and Chippewa.

 

Team Ontario will take part in the Opening Ceremonies on Sunday, July 20th at 4:00 p.m. MT. The U16 team will begin their quest for a gold medal on Monday, July 21st with an 10:00 a.m. showdown against Team Saskatchewan at Al Ritchie Arena. Immediately following the game, Team Ontario will take on Manitoba at 1:00 p.m. Additional games will also be held at Doug Wickenheiser Arena.
